Skill Evaluation Matrix for Product Managers (Free Template)

Coaching is your super power. Make use of it!

Over the years I've seen and tried many tools to assess the skill levels of product managers.

Many of them were too complex or not holistic enough. In the past years, I cherry-picked different frameworks (mainly Marty Cagan and Petra Wille) and created my process on top of it.

It groups different skills into 3 buckets:

  1. Product Knowledge how well does the person know the user, product, organization, and domain

  2. Process Skills: how good is the person in discovery, delivery, optimization, etc.

  3. People Skills: How good of a communicator, leader, and collaborator is the PM

It allows space for reflection (i.e. reasoning) and asks for a rating from 1-10 (1 being an absolute beginner, 10 being an expert). It then prompts to come up with growth opportunities, i.e. the missing gaps between the given rating and a 10.

I created a step-by-step Miro template that you can duplicate and start using today for your coaching workflow 👇

The skill assessment matrix is just one part of an effective coaching setup. Check out my latest newsletter post for my full 5-step process
